Climate Change Poster

Our world is a big, big place full of many interesting things.  There are people, plants and animals in our world.  But now there are more people on the Earth than there ever have been.  And a lot of people use cars, TVs, computers, and lots of other things that emit (give off) carbon.  That means these things, when we use them, put carbon into the air.  You can't see carbon.  But think about when you put a drop of red food coloring into water.  One little drop will turn the water a little red.  Carbon is like the food coloring, but it goes into the air.  One little bit of carbon in the air is okay, but too much will mean that the air will change.  The air is what allows sunshine in.  Sunshine gives us light and heat to make animals, plants and people grow.  But if the air changes, it will let in the heat but won't let it out again.  That will make the Earth heat up.

As the Earth heats up, things will change.  Just like ice melts on a hot day, ice in the ocean at the Earth's poles will melt too.  Other things will change too.  Deserts (places that are hot and don't have a lot of plants) will grow bigger.  This means that animals might lose their homes.

But there are things people can do to help the plants and animals.  We can use those things that emit carbon less.  We can drive less often, walk more often, and watch less TV.  Also, we can turn off the lights when we leave a room.  We can try to save water by turning off the tap while we are brushing our teeth.

It's a fun time to be a person, because the Earth needs our help.  And it's fun to be helpful!

There are many ways to help.  One thing we can do is tell people how they can stop putting so much carbon into the air.  That's where you come in.  You will be given or will get to choose one way that people can stop using too much carbon.  Your job is to make that into a poster to teach other people about it.  These posters will be put all around the school so other children, and even teachers and parents, can learn.

Possible Ways to Save:
  • Turn off the lights when you leave the room
  • Unplug your appliances whenever they are not in use
  • Unplug anything that has a remote:  television, DVD player, video games
  • Always run your dishwasher/washer/dryer with a full load
  • Hang up your laundry to dry
  • Always cover the pan while boiling water
  • Return cold foods and drinks to the refrigerator promptly
  • Slow down!  Cars use 25% less fuel at 55mph than they do at 70mph
  • Carpool!
  • Recycle paper and plastic or aluminum bottles and cans
